notthatkindagay: They’re young, they’re broke, and they pay for organic salmon with government subsidies. Got a problem with that? The government spends a ridiculous amount of money on things that I don’t agree with, so the fact that I spend my SNAP on soy milk and fresh fruit doesn’t bother me.
Hahahahah I’ve been reading the comments on this article all morning. Why?
People are so dumb. $200 a month in food stamps so people can eat is not even close to any of the real problems in this country. Just thank them for buying healthy, good food instead of soda & chips & packaged bullshit so they don’t add to our ridiculous medical costs down the line.
Plus, why the fuck shouldn’t “hipsters” be on food stamps? If they meet the government criteria for financial assistance, they clearly need the money. Shit I’m going to have to apply for them for a while when I graduate. Especially until I find a second job, and maybe even after that too. It doesn’t really matter how you dress or look, being poor is being poor, and as long as government exists it is obligated to help the people of its territory.
Fuck it, I think it’s WONDERFUL that young people are buying fresh foods, including organic foods, with their food stamps. Have you seen the foods that come out of industries supported government subsidies? They’re fucking abysmal. High fructose corn syrup? Do you know how much of that bullshit the government has subsidized? And how much “poor food” is loaded with that? It’s ridiculous. If the government won’t subsidize foods that are better for people, I think it’s more appropriate that people turn around and use money from the government to buy those things.
Amanda, I agree with you 100%. I’ve seen people buy 90 dollars worth of valentines candy on food stamps or nothing but frozen foods, hamburger helper, junk food and cokes on food stamps.
